Personal Philosophy
My philosophy and values about teaching are ever-changing and developing. This is because I am continually learning, through research, professional development and experience. My teaching pedagogy underpins values of a humanistic approach that fosters student-directed learning with a strong emphasis on relationships. Throughout my role as an educator, I strongly value diversity, inclusion and foster differentiation practices in my classroom.
I use Inquiry-Based learning (IBL) approaches in my teaching which take advantage of childrens' natural sense of curiosity. In IBL, students explore, question and research an inquiry investigation where they have the opportunity to lead the learning and discovery. This approach sparks enthusiasm in students and allows for engaging and relevant learning experiences. .
We are always embodied in a relationship and relationships always matter. Knowing your students well and having a positive student-teacher relationship forms the foundation of students’ social context in which learning occurs. Effective relationships enable teachers to find the best way to motivate individual learners and allows students to feel safe and secure in the school setting. This reflects the humanistic approach which means the students feel their teacher is approachable, compassionate and ready to actively listen.
According to the Australian Curriculum, all students are entitled to rigorous, relevant and engaging learning programs which provide a challenging curriculum, addressing their individual learning needs. This places particular importance on the efforts that teachers make to understand and respond to student diversity and support each student to learn to their potential. I have a strong focus on providing differentiated learning experiences where the diverse range of students' needs are facilitated.
This corresponds to the need for relationships because successful differentiation requires a knowledge and understanding of each students' background and experiences, learning styles, readiness, interests and capabilities. Effective relationships allow teachers to promote an inclusive classroom that provides multiple pathways for learning where each student has equitable access to learning. All students are unique and make our classrooms extremely diverse. This is why differentiation is integral to support inclusion of all students to provide access to learning for all students to be successful.
